Italia: manteniamo le promesse di aiuti

Negli ultimi anni gli aiuti umanitari italiani hanno contribuito a salvare migliaia di vite umane e dato speranza a molti delle popolazioni più povere del mondo. Ma dal prossimo anno il governo propone di ridurre questi aiuti salva-vita di 170 milioni di Euro -- rimangiandosi la promessa fatta all'Europa di incrementare gli aiuti internazionali. 

Il ministro delle finanze Tremonti potrebbe presentare la proposta di finanziaria al Parlamento già questa settimana -- perciò prima che sia tardi riempiamolo di messaggi chiedendogli di ritirare i tagli. PhD-level Course "Computational content of proofs" held by Professor H. Schwichtenberg

In my Department there will be a very interesting PhD-level course, organized by my colleague and friend Marco Benini. I quote from his presentation:

Computational content of proofs

We consider logical propositions concerning data structures. If such a proposition involves (constructive) existential quantifiers in strictly positive positions, then -- according to Brouwer, Heyting and Kolmogorov -- it can be seen as a computational problem. A (constructive) proof of the proposition then provides a solution to this problem, and one can machine extract (via a realizability interpretation) this solution in the form of a lambda calculus term involving recursion operators, which can be seen as (and translated into) a functional program. We will develop from scratch the theory of (1) computability in higher types, based on Scott's information systems, and (2) realizability interpretations of a logic of inductive definitions. A special emphasis will be on the question how to control at the proof level the complexity of the extracted programs.

This PhD-level course is kindly held by Professor H. Schwichtenberg, Mathematisches Institut, Fakultät für Mathematik, Informatik und Statistik, Ludwig Maximillians Universität - Muenchen (DE). This PhD-level course is held under the Erasmus program. There is no final examination. If a student needs an attendance certification, please, contact Prof. Marco Benini by email.

Kelkaj geamikoj demandis al mi kiel progresigi sian lingvokonon de esperanto. Mi tuj respondis, ke la plej bona maniero estas legado de boan literaturo, tio signifas de klasikaj aŭtoroj.

Sed de kie komenci? Unue, mi konsilas utiligi la vikipedigiitan bazan legoliston de William Auld. La nura limo de tiu listo estas ĝisdatigo: 1997. Miaopinie la plej kompleta verko kiu prezentas la esperantan literaturon estas la ne-tiel-konciza enciklopedio de esperanta literaturo (728 paĝojn), aŭtoro Geoffrey Sutton. Tiu impona verko estis verkita en la angla, do vi devas kapabli almenaŭ legi tiun ĉi lingvon. Mi vidas iel ironion en ĉi tiu fakto, ĉar ŝajnas, ke ni esperantistoj ne plu estas "la popolo de (niaj) libroj", se la publiko interesita al nia literaturo pli vastas en la anglalingva angulo de la mondo ol en la esperanta...

Arctic ice is melting so fast that, for the first time in human history, you can sail straight through the Arctic. Hurricanes and other extreme weather patterns are growing in size and number. As an Avaaz member in St. Kitts writes, "While those in the US can evacuate an area when a powerful hurricane is on its way, those of us on the islands do not have that option." Now, small island nations -- whose highest points are often only a few meters above sea level -- are preparing evacuation plans to guarantee the survival of their populations.

President Remengesau of Palau, a small island in the Pacific, recently said:

Palau has lost at least one third of its coral reefs due to climate change related weather patterns. We also lost most of our agricultural production due to drought and extreme high tides. These are not theoretical, scientific losses -- they are the losses of our resources and our livelihoods.... For island states, time is not running out. It has run out. And our path may very well be the window to your own future and the future of our planet.

Beyond the islands, countries like Bangladesh -- population, 150 million -- face losing large parts of their landmass. The experience of our planet's most vulnerable communities serves as a warning sign of the future world we can all expect: extreme weather growing in intensity, conflict over water and food supplies, coasts disappearing and hundreds of millions made refugees.

Come scaricare video da YouTube con Safari

A volte abbiamo le soluzioni sotto il naso e non le conosciamo. Stasera, dopo una giornata di scrittura intensa, mi sono chiesto: cos'è che mi impedisce di salvare i video che vedo per esempio su YouTube sul mio mac (credete che stia delirando? Ebbene sì; provate a scrivere una tesi di dottorato anche voi, poi mi capirete)?

Così sono andato sul menù Finestra e ho cliccato su Attività, appena sotto Download. Magia! Ecco lì tutte le url, belle pronte per voi, su cosa sta facendo il vostro browser di Apple. Se tenete premuto il tasto Option (o Mela, che dir si voglia) e cliccate sull'url del video che state scaricando Safari aprirà un'altra finestra e vi salverà il vostro filmato.

I filmati YouTube sono in formato .flv e possono essere visti con VLC. Per masterizzarli su dvd invece vanno convertiti in .mov. Ci sono un po' di servizi online per farlo, ma sono lenti. Ho provato un po' di applicazioni scrause ma nessuna mi soddisfa al 100%. Qualcuno ha qualche proposta?

Waiting for Chrome...

I dunno why, but after the last upgrade my Firefox for Mac crashes much more than ever! I can't stand it anymore! As i essentially use Google application, I'm really waiting for Chrome to come out. Scott McCloud is one of my favourite comic maker, and he has realized a comic book to present the new browser by Google. Check it out!
